Franciscan Physicians Hospital has a tradition of helping the children who live at St. Joseph’s Carmelite Home and this Easter is no exception. But, what started as a hospital committee project turned into a project completely driven by Facebook groups wanting to help.
Office supervisor and Franciscan employee, Brandy Egnatz, is part of the Service Excellence Committee at Franciscan Physicians Hospital and helped formulate the idea for the Easter basket donation. To make the most out of the project, she decided to write a post requesting donated Easter items in two different Facebook groups she belongs to. One post went to went to a group of over 3,000 northwest Indiana moms and the other was for the town of Lowell.
Egnatz coordinated the project when she started getting an outpouring of Facebook members who wanted to help in the mission.
“I told them what I was doing and I asked for donations. Then I bought the baskets and the next thing you know, I had everything to fill them!” Egnatz said. “I met the women to collect the donations and with the help of my mom, Vickie Loeber (whom is also a Franciscan employee) and my babysitter Kris Holsti, we filled the baskets”.
Delivery of the gifts took place Thursday March 14th, during which time a basket with each child’s name was provided. Baskets contained stuffed animals, candy, toys and books that were all age appropriate for each child. Over 65 baskets were made and delivered.
Egnatz commented on why this project was so important to her. “I just wanted the children to have something to open on Easter. I have three kids and couldn’t imagine them not having a basket to wake up to. I just wanted to make them happy”.

Car Wash for Carmelite
Franciscan Physicians Hospital’s Service Excellence Committee will host a fundraising car wash Friday, July 20, from noon to 5 p.m. at the hospital, 701 Superior Avenue in Munster.
The car wash is donation-based and all proceeds will go to the St. Joseph’s Carmelite Home in East Chicago. The Carmelite Home is a residential treatment center for abused, neglected and abandoned children.

Helping Those Who Help Those In Need
Employees and physicians at Franciscan Physicians Hospital worked to raise $8,050 for the St. Joseph’s Carmelite Home, a residential treatment center for abused, neglected, and abandoned children in East Chicago.
The Carmelite Home recently endured significant state funding cuts, limiting the number of children they are able to care for. This treatment center, which previously took in as many as 105 children, is now caring for only 35. These funding cuts have moved children from the Carmelite Home to foster care throughout the region and have left diminished resources and financial obligations a still prominent struggle.
Efforts to raise money included week long events like dress down Friday, a Mexican Fiesta, bake sale, department basket raffle, movie basket raffle and breakfast rounding cart. Physician donations were also taken to contribute to the fundraising event.
Barb Greene, president of Franciscan Physicians Hospital, notes that she is proud of her staff and physicians and she is proud to be part of an organization that encourages helping those less fortunate. “My staff all has large hearts and are very generous. They are moved to help those in need. They are genuine people and I am proud of their efforts here. Christ’s ministry continues through the work of their hands.”
The fundraising campaign was headed by the hospital’s Service Excellence Committee. Janet Rolley, chair of the Service Excellence Committee, states “I am very humbled by the generosity of our staff and doctors. They saw a need and gave unselfishly. I am appreciative of the donations businesses made to help us in our efforts to raise funds for the Carmelite Home. Some businesses donated money, others were able to donate items or give us reduced pricing." Special thanks go to the businesses that donated/reduced prices on items for our fundraising efforts.

Holiday Cheer for Those in Need
For the last two years, Franciscan Physicians Hospital employees and physicians have "adopted" children at the Carmelite Home in East Chicago. These people give of themselves this time of year by donating items like clothing, food and money.
The Carmelite Home, which opened in 1913, has evolved from an orphanage to a group home, to a certified residential treatment center for children between the ages of six and 18. They also provide service as an emergency shelter for babies and toddlers in need of immediate assistance. This center is available 24 hours a day.
The Carmelite Home has helped countless children experiencing personal and family problems. Many suffer the trauma of physical and emotional abuse or neglect, needing care and nurturance in a supportive environment.
Many residents of the Carmelite Home are not able to function academically or socially in the public/private school environment, so they've created an accredited home school to meet their individual needs. Now students who were once failing are succeeding with new confidence!
The impact made on these individuals with help from Franciscan Physicians Hospital's is positive. By providing gifts and necessities, these children can experience the Christmas that they deserve in the loving environment of the Carmelite Home.
Thank you to the employees and physicians who made this possible. Christ's love is shown through your grace and generosity during this giving time of year.
